Curly, Kinky and Free Manifesto (Freewrite) – By: Imani Briscoe

The following poem was written in response to the many personal negative hair related experiences within my PWI’s campus community. I never had to deal with people asking to touch my hair so fervently just to satisfy their curiosity until I started my undergraduate career at a PWI. Even after having discussions with my peers about the work and time I put into doing my hair, they playfully yet annoyingly continue the behavior. This culmination of issues have been presented as my:

Curly, Kinky and Free

Manifesto

No, Please Touch It

If it’s so enticing and you can’t help yourself

Please touch my hair

If you find yourself itching with curiosity as to how it grows and it keeps you up at night

Please touch my hair

If you’ve never seen such a magnificent crown composed of tangles and curls

Please touch my hair

If you wonder how my genes could produce such a resilient force that will defy gravity no matter what tries to hold it down

Please touch my hair

When you can no longer grasp why my hair is in a different style every day of the week just because I felt like it

Please touch my hair

When you wonder why I look like a rebel without even trying simply because my hair wants to do its own thing and I let it

Please touch my hair

Because you are so curious and haven’t considered that I might not know you well enough to get that close

Please touch my hair

Since it took me an hour to wash, an hour to condition, 30 minutes to detangle, two hours to twist, overnight to dry and set and 30 minutes to untwist and style

Please touch my hair

Because you don’t see the hard work, time, effort and pride I have in these kinky locs but rather just something to satisfy your fancy

Please touch my hair

But know that when you reach out your fingers and have the audacity to touch my hair

I will recite this poem for your much too curious self

So please, touch my hair
